OnX Maps Advanced Features Every Fly Fisher Should Be Using

Most fly fishers who use OnX are leaving its best features on the table. They download the app, drop a pin on a public access point, and call it scouting. That's fine — but it's about 20% of what the tool can do.

If you've had OnX for a season or two and want to actually fish water nobody else is finding, this is the guide. We're going deep on offline maps, waypoint systems, the aerial imagery time-slider (genuinely underused), and the water layer stack. These aren't gimmicks. Used correctly, they change how you pre-read rivers before you ever wet a line.

Why OnX Is Built for Anglers, Not Just Hunters

OnX Backcountry started in the hunting world, and most marketing reflects that. But the underlying data — property boundaries, topography, hydrographic layers, and aerial imagery — is arguably more useful for fly fishers than any hunting-specific tool on the market.

Hunters want to know who owns the ridge. You want to know who owns the bank, whether that riffle is public or private, and whether that side channel you spotted on Google Maps from 2019 still holds water. OnX answers all of that. The trick is knowing where to look.

Offline Maps: Set These Up Before You Leave the Driveway

Cell coverage on most trout water is either spotty or nonexistent. Relying on a live connection in the field isn't a strategy — it's optimism.

OnX's offline download system is straightforward but easy to misconfigure. Here's how to do it right:

Download at the right zoom level. In the app, navigate to the area you're fishing, tap the layer icon, then select "Download Map." The critical step: slide the zoom range all the way to the maximum. A default download saves you at medium zoom — enough to navigate, not enough to identify individual pools or seams from above. Max zoom gives you the resolution to pick apart a run from the trail before you've even rigged up.

Create region-specific downloads. Don't download your entire home state. Create separate downloads by drainage — one for the upper Madison, one for the lower, one for each tributary you might explore. Smaller files load faster, and you'll actually update them. A single massive download gets stale and stays that way.

Set downloads to auto-update on WiFi. OnX lets you schedule automatic updates. Turn this on. Aerial imagery and property boundary data does change, and you want the most current version every time you leave for a trip.

Pro tip: download one tile that extends 10-15 miles beyond your planned water. Access roads change, detours happen, and you do not want to be navigating around a washed-out road crossing with no signal.

Custom Waypoints: Build a System That Survives Seasons

The default behavior — drop a pin, name it "good pool 6/12" — creates a folder of unlabeled chaos inside of two seasons. A better system takes five minutes to set up once.

Color-code by water type. Assign colors intentionally: red for confirmed holds (fish caught here), yellow for promising structure you want to revisit, blue for access points and parking, green for camping or base camp spots. When you're scanning your map in the dark before a predawn wade, colors carry information faster than reading text.

Use consistent naming conventions. A format like [River initials]-[Type]-[Year first noted] works well. So: YSR-POOL-24 means Yellowstone River, pool, first noted in 2024. You can search waypoint names in the app, which turns your collection into a searchable database rather than a pile of pushpins.

Add notes to every waypoint. OnX allows text notes on each marker. Use them. Record water level (gauge reading if you know it), time of year, fly, and fish size or count. After three seasons this becomes more useful than any guidebook — it's your personal river log mapped onto the actual water.

Share waypoints selectively. OnX lets you share individual waypoints or folders with other users. This is how serious fishing partners should exchange information — not a screenshot of a pin, but an actual synced location with notes attached.

The Aerial Imagery Time-Slider: The Feature Most Anglers Miss

OnX Backcountry includes historical aerial imagery going back varying years depending on your region. Access it by tapping the layers icon and selecting "Imagery," then looking for the time-slider control that appears at the bottom of the screen. Slide it left to move backward through available image dates.

Why this matters for fly fishers: Rivers are not static. A channel that held fish in 2019 may have shifted two hundred yards by 2024. A gravel bar that looked like pedestrian water last year may have developed into a complex seam with a deep outside bend following a high-water event. The time-slider lets you watch that evolution.

How to use it for pre-trip scouting:

Compare the oldest available imagery against current. Look for channel braiding — anywhere the river has split and rejoined is worth physical investigation. These areas are transition zones where fish stage before and after spawning runs, and they hold year-round populations in freestone streams.

Look for oxbow cutoffs. When a river straightens a meander, the old bend becomes an isolated pool or backwater. These often hold large fish that never see pressure because they don't appear on any current satellite view.

Watch the gravel movements. High-resolution imagery often shows gravel bar position clearly. Bars that have migrated downstream create new structure — the leading edge of a bar is a current break, and current breaks hold fish.

Practical workflow: Pull up the time-slider on the section you plan to fish, step through three or four historical dates, and screenshot any significant channel changes. Mark those locations as yellow waypoints before the trip. When you arrive, you're not scouting blind — you're confirming or disproving a thesis you already built at home.

Water Layer Overlays: Reading Structure Before You Arrive

OnX Backcountry includes hydrographic data layers that most users never activate. These aren't decorative — they contain structural information about your water.

Stream order overlay. This layer assigns a numeric rank to every waterway based on the Strahler stream order system — a first-order stream has no tributaries, a second-order stream is formed by two first-order streams merging, and so on. Higher-order streams are larger, more productive, and typically hold more fish. More useful: the map shows you exactly where lower-order tributaries enter higher-order streams. Those confluences are high-probability feeding stations, especially during hatches.

Water feature labels. Enable this layer and you'll see named springs, unnamed seeps, and intermittent flows that aren't visible on a standard topo map. Springs are particularly valuable — they stabilize water temperature, maintain flow during drought conditions, and concentrate fish during thermal stress. Finding a spring that enters your river mid-reach is like finding a guaranteed holding spot on a hundred-degree August afternoon.

Contour + hydro combined. Run the topographic contour layer alongside the water overlay and you can identify gradient changes from above. Steep gradient sections — visible as tightly spaced contours near the river channel — produce pocket water and technical structure. Gentle gradient sections produce longer flats and slower pools. Knowing which you're walking into before you arrive changes your fly selection and approach strategy before you ever park the truck.

Putting It Together: A 30-Minute Pre-Trip Routine

These features compound when used in sequence. Here's a repeatable workflow before any new river trip:

  1. Download offline tiles at max zoom for the target drainage plus a 15-mile buffer, 48 hours before departure.
  2. Pull up historical imagery and step through available dates. Screenshot and mark any channel changes as yellow waypoints.
  3. Enable stream order and water feature layers. Mark all confluences and visible spring entries as waypoints.
  4. Read the gradient. Identify one or two high-gradient sections (pocket water) and one low-gradient section (flat/pool) as anchor spots for the day.
  5. Check property boundaries. Confirm public access corridors and identify any private land pinch points before you plan your wade-in route.

Thirty minutes the night before a trip eliminates three hours of on-water confusion. You arrive with a map in your head, not just a pin on a screen.

The Right Tool Deserves the Full Subscription
