How to Find Legal Dispersed Camping Spots with OnX Maps (Without Guessing at Boundaries)

You can be standing on BLM land looking at a perfectly good flat spot that is, in fact, forty yards inside a private parcel.

The consequences range from mildly awkward to genuinely bad. Best case, you get flagged down and asked to move. Worse case, you're cited for trespassing, your vehicle gets towed from a locked ranch road, or you've set up camp in a spot with an active grazing lease and a very unhappy rancher whose cattle you've now scattered. None of this requires bad intent. It requires bad information, which is the actual problem worth solving.

Check the 14-day and distance rules for that specific agency. Leave a waypoint. Drop a pin at your camp. It sounds unnecessary until you're hiking back from a fishing spot or a trailhead at dusk and every dirt spur looks identical.

The Checkerboard Problem, Explained

If you've never run into checkerboarded land, it's worth understanding why it exists, because it explains why "just look for a fence" doesn't work as a rule of thumb. In the mid-1800s, the federal government granted alternating one-mile-square sections of land to railroad companies as an incentive to build rail lines west — typically the odd-numbered sections in a given township, with the even-numbered sections remaining public. Much of that railroad land was later sold to private ranching and timber interests, while the interspersed public sections stayed in BLM or Forest Service hands.

The result, more than a century and a half later, is that huge stretches of Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and parts of a dozen other states are a literal checkerboard: a public square mile, then a private square mile, then public again, repeating for tens of miles with no consistent fencing, no signage, and no visual boundary at all in open rangeland. You can walk in a straight line and cross from public to private to public three times in three miles without any way to know it except a survey line that exists only on paper — or on a parcel-ownership map.

This is the scenario where dispersed camping goes wrong most often for people who aren't doing anything careless. They're simply in a landscape where "obviously public-looking land" and "actually public land" have stopped being the same thing. A road that looks like a public forest road can dead-end onto a private inholding accessed by an easement, and the flat pull-off at the end of it can belong to the rancher who granted that easement, not to the Forest Service. There is no way to know this by looking. There is a way to know it by checking a parcel layer before you park.

RV and Trailer-Specific Considerations

Everything above applies whether you're in a tent, a rooftop setup, or a full-size camper — but towing changes the math on where you can actually go, not just where you're allowed to go. A forest road that's a fine truck route with 8 inches of clearance can be a genuinely bad idea with a 28-foot travel trailer behind you, especially if it narrows, has no turnaround, or drops in grade in a way that's fine going down and a problem coming back up.

Check the road classification layer before committing to a route with anything larger than a truck bed camper. Common Mistakes Even Experienced Campers Make

Assuming a well-used pull-off means it's legal. Popular dispersed sites get worn in by years of use, and a fire ring doesn't confer legality. Some heavily used "known spots" that show up in camping apps and forums are actually on private land with an owner who's simply given up on enforcement — until they haven't.

Not checking seasonal or fire-driven closures. Land ownership doesn't change, but access does. A spot that's legally public and normally open to camping can be closed by a temporary fire restriction, a wildlife closure during calving or nesting season, or a road closure for logging operations. The ownership layer tells you who manages the land; it's still your job to check that agency's current closure list.

Camping too close to water. Most agencies require camping at least 100-200 feet from streams, rivers, and lakes, both for resource protection and because flash flood risk in a dry wash is real and underestimated. This is a rule independent of ownership, and it's the one most often ignored by people focused entirely on finding a scenic spot.

Overlooking grazing leases on public land. Public land under BLM or Forest Service management is very often also under an active grazing lease to a rancher. You're legally allowed to camp there, but cattle, open gates that need to stay closed behind you, and irrigation infrastructure are all part of sharing that land responsibly — and a good relationship with a leaseholder who has genuine skin in that ground is worth more than most people realize the first time you need a locked gate opened.
